As I thought through the interplay between light, water, and rock, I saw a similar connection between the art forms I pursue—fabric, movement, and words. This poem and quilt were inspired by an Aurora we saw that had a vivid purple. It twisted like a long piece of gauzy fabric, like a twirling dancer, like water, like lava. I wanted to capture this twisting motion in my quilt, so I used wedge-shaped strips instead of straight-edged strips. And though the result gives the impression of curves, the seams are all straight lines. Indeed, when a straight line is also a curved line, we can appreciate that everything is connected. 26.75” x 23”
