The Hearths We Stole

The Hearths We Stole

$2,000.00

The square quilt block pattern is called Log Cabin and has always been my favorite. The small square in the center was traditionally made of red fabric, as it represented the hearth in the center of the home. But in order for settler cabins to be built, an Indigenous hearth had to be removed. The circular quilting around the beaded square represents the circular homes of many Indigenous Tribes, most familiar is the tipi. In making these beaded hearths, I wanted to return the focus to Indigenous hearths that were stolen, burned, and buried. Usually white Westward Expansion is told in glorious color and Indigenous history is a mere black and white footnote. This quilt hopes to flip that.
